Screens 24/7. All around us. You know, like that Black Mirror episode. It’s real now. 

We won’t moan like our parents about screen time, but there is a downside. All these screens make it easy to forget those strange, wonderful creatures known as humans we encounter when we leave the house. These humans are the key to everything professionally, personally, spiritually, and more. 

People are still at the heart of business, too. Every introduction, referral, buying decision, recommendation, and/or friendly word of encouragement starts and ends with people. For example, you’re 4x more likely to get that next job if a buddy refers you. Wow.

On that fact alone, we’re willing to make the bold assertion that WHO you know is way more important than WHAT you know. In fact, your network is your net worth. If that’s true and you agree, how are you getting to know people? 

A Proverbial Deal with the Devil

We made a dire trade decades ago. In exchange for exponential increases in reach with digital everything, we lost depth. Ironically, the real people on our screens got fuzzier as screen resolutions got sharper. More people, less connection. 

Your 1,100 connections on LinkedIn is of value, but is it “networking?” It can happen, but it’s rare.
