Cracks in the Code: 3 Reasons Digital Networking Disappoints

Technology is mind-blowing. We're amazed. And yet, we all know it’s a bandaid for what we’re all looking for — real, in-person connection of all varieties.
Dec 12, 2023

In an era dominated by digital connections — especially since Covid, the promises of digital networking just keep falling short. The seemingly boundless reach of internet use cases has not been able to replicate the authenticity that comes with face-to-face interactions.

We remember the first FaceTime commercial or more recent Amazon Echo video call capabilities. Amazing technology. Really amazing. And yet, we all know it’s a bandaid for what we’re all looking for — real, in-person connection of all varieties.

As we explore the disappointments of digital networking, let’s unveil the cracks in the code Tripally.io aims to mend.

1. Shallow Interactions

Digital networking is curiously open-ended and confining simultaneously. When we’re stuck in the virtual realm (unless you’re really, really intentional), we’re stuck in virtual relationships. Virtual relationships, like virtual reality, are a bad facsimile of what our wiring demands.

We’re breaking this barrier by encouraging real, in-person connections that go beyond superficial interactions like DMs, follows, likes, and sheepish “let’s grab coffee” inquiries.

2. Missed Opportunities

Networking is more roulette than engineering. Sometimes you win big and make a great connection, and sometimes you don’t. Either way, you have to show up and play the game if you want a vibrant community of connections.

To be sure, digital platforms give you a broader reach — but it’s thin. Great for building a following, horrendous for person-to-person trust-building that leads to real relationships. We’ve never built any meaningful relationship by stopping at digital, and yet it’s so easy to end our efforts there and feel like we did something useful.

Why not bypass the digital pageantry altogether? Use Tripally.io to find opportunities for face-to-face interactions, and then go have them.

3. Woefully Lack of Authenticity (Let’s Call it Dishonesty)

Few people have the life, personality, or level of success they portray online. Social media and other digital networking platforms consolidate this in an unusual way, then mainline it to us en masse. We adore social media, but this inc.com article by Jessica Stillman pulls back the curtain on at least one type of inauthenticity where human connection would’ve mollified personal distress greatly.

With Tripally.io you can certainly put your best foot forward online. But instead of stopping there, use it to catapult yourself into the in-person connections that restore real community.

Digital Networking Fatigue

We’ve assembled roughly 15 years investing time and energy into putting our best selves onto platforms like LinkedIn and other social media. They’re useful platforms, for sure! But it’s starting to feel like a sunk cost rather than investment in the future. Just more names in the Rolodex that never seem to amount to anything.

We propose a more concrete investment, which is to put yourself online in a way that leads to something. With Tripally.io, if you want to meet up with an accounting pro, executive coach, or window cleaner for coffee, you can just do it. Find any kind of interesting person. Build the relationship. Furthermore, we’re encouraging folks to be the kind of people that people want to meet.

Try Tripally.io

As we navigate the world of digital, it’s more and more evident that true connections stem from shared experiences and built trust, not mere likes, follows, or DMs. We’re here to bridge the gap between digital and authentic networking by forging lasting, in-person professional connections.

If you're an ambitious networker at any phase in your career, you're gonna want to be a part of this Tripally crowd. Meet people in your town. Be someone people want to meet.
