In the digital era of connections, the chasm between people has never been greater. There's something special about face-to-face relationships that just can't be replicated online. Josh Polgardi, founder of Tripally, knows this all too well.
Recently, he sat down with host Joe Steele on the Experience Curve Podcast to dive deep into the journey of Tripally and the power of in-person relationships in today's business landscape.
But what exactly is Tripally, and how did it start? When Josh left corporate America in the summer of 2023, he immediately went to LinkedIn to scale his profile and try to make more meaningful business connections. Quickly, he made a few discoveries:
To test this idea, Josh opened the door to anyone who might find his skill set useful. No strings attached – anyone could meet with him to explore any kind of question or problem. It was in one of those meetings where he met his co-founder, Krishnil Bhojani, and together they formed Tripally with a vision in mind and a technical skill set in hand.
The idea was to brush off the digital networking game that so rarely leads to relationships, and instead give eager networkers an easier path to the golden, one-on-one interactions that really move careers forward.
In their discussion, Joe and Josh explore one of the major barriers to networking these days: people — by default — tend to confuse marketing and public relations with networking. Posting on social media, building an audience, building your personal brand – all of these are great things. But can you reasonably consider a list of emails or 10,000 connections on LinkedIn your network?
Not really. Those are marketing assets, not relationships.
Josh emphasizes how this confusion between marketing and networking creates a barrier between professionals and their real network of ride-or-die business allies. Who do you call when you need help or insight? Who calls you? This is your real business network, and everyone needs business allies they can count on.
The trick, he says, is to create an environment where meeting for networking is expected and not awkward. Once you have that, his key to networking is this: “It’s not about taking; it is about giving without expecting anything in return.”
