Networking Isn’t What You Think it Is

Hint: real networking is about trust.
Dec 30, 2023

You might be thinking, “Gosh, if I only knew more people I could do so much good.” That’s true, but real networking is so much more. Everyone thinks they need networking, but so few seem to know why.

Our perspective: we believe true networking is a relational milestone built on time and intentionality. You have to build your relationships through the name recognition, acquaintance, and buddy phases. With the right intentionality and time spent, suddenly you trust this person. You believe in their project or professional goals. They handle themselves with character and they’re good at what they do.

They’re a friend.

It’s only at this moment that you can responsibly represent yourself and your friend in what we would call true networking. You can recommend, refer, and represent them with confidence and generous enthusiasm. And they, in turn, can do the same for you.

Networking, for us, is just another way to say “trust.” The rest of it is just panning for gold, hoping you get to this nugget of trust.

How do you get to trust? Well, there’s the traditional way and the Tripally.io way. They both have their merits, but let’s explore.

The Traditional Networking Journey

Let’s be honest, we all want to network better so we can thrive. What thriving means to you definitely has an impact on your results. If you approach it with generosity as your first priority — giving instead of taking, supporting instead of soliciting — you’ll find much more vibrance, community, and strong relationships.

Even with the right intentions, our networking quest started the hard way:

  1. Work super hard and show up
  2. Keep showing up, keep working hard
  3. Meet someone by chance or by introduction
  4. Hit it off, or don’t
  5. If you hit it off, you build a relationship
  6. If that relationship blossoms, trust enters the scene

It can happen quickly, slowly, or not at all with some folks. But only at this milestone of trust can you responsibly extend support to their projects, goals, or endeavors (and vice versa).

The Pitfalls of Traditional Networking

20 years in and we still only kinda/sorta have something resembling a strong network. Traditional networking is two parts hope, one part bravery, and one part social skills all making one big guesswork cocktail. You can put yourself into the right situations over and over again, but meaningful connections can still be elusive.

That problem compounds with what many call “digital networking.” In our estimation, digital networking has an expectation problem. If you’re interested in grabbing coffee or learning more about what someone does, how do you pursue that on something like LinkedIn?

We’ve paneled females that don’t feel awkward at all reaching out via DMs, but admit they’d feel suspicious if a guy reached out randomly. We’ve interviewed males that feel it’s presumptive or possibly creepy reaching out, but admit feeling flattered when someone else does.

One thing’s for sure, we need a platform built on clear expectations. We want a place where serious networkers can find people who want to meet for business and skip right to the meeting. No intro required — it’s what everyone’s there to do.

Clever lead in, huh? We’re super subtle.

Tripally: Clear Expectations Accelerate Growth

Well guess what? We built that platform. Tripally bypasses the weird vibes and vague expectations of traditional and/or digital networking, transforming your journey from guesswork and hope to real business relationships.

Everyone on Tripally has similar networking goals, fast-tracking your networking growth from “hello” to business friendships. If you find a cool person on the platform, they’re down to network in person. Period. And if you’re on the platform, you’re making yourself a magnet for networking in your town.

Furthermore, it’s great for travel. If you’re on the road from time to time or are completely immersed in digital nomad life, start creating business relationships wherever you are. And do it all in person over a simple cup of coffee, mug of beer, or a burger.
